Beginners’ Meditation

If you are new to meditation then a good place to start is our Monday or Wednesday evening drop-in sessions. We run a guided meditation for anyone who is new to Shambhala or meditation. One of our qualified instructors will give a guided meditation and offer the chance to ask questions about meditation practice. Then we invite people to join the group in the main meditation hall.

Mindfulness meditation provides many benefits – it develops the qualities of stability, clarity, and strength of mind. It allows us to live more mindfully and so improves confidence and concentration, and enables us to handle stress better.

We also regularly run our 4 week beginners course, Learn to Meditate, which cover topics such as:

  • Basic meditation: posture, mindfulness of breathing, working with thoughts.
  • Starting a meditation practice at home.
  • Meditation as a way of making friends with ourself.
  • Working with obstacles to meditation practice.
  • Understanding how meditation ‘works’: mindfulness (trenpa) and awareness (sheshin).
  • How meditation nurtures insight.

The London Shambhala Centre has been teaching mindfulness meditation to all – regardless of background and religious beliefs – for over thirty years. Our instructors have many years experience of personal practice and have completed intensive training retreats in how to teach meditation to others.
